Where were you born and raised?
I
was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. The thing that I miss
most about my hometown (other than my family) is devouring
hard shell crabs during the summer months. Twice a year I
ship a couple of bushels here to Syracuse so that I can have
a taste of home.
When did you begin working at WAER?
I started working at WAER in October of 1992 as the
station's Program Director. I served as Program Director of WEAA FM in Baltimore (licensed to Morgan State University)
prior to coming to Syracuse.
What do you do at WAER?
As the Director & General Manager for WAER I manage the
day-to-day operation of the station including the station's
finances, setting goals, priorities, and strategic vision
all in an effort to achieve the station's mission.
What was the most unusual job you ever had?
I'm
not sure how unusual they were, but I worked simultaneously
as a glass fabricator for a glass and mirror installation
company and as the "sound guy" for a comedy club.
Why do you love public radio?
It's radio with an educational and community centered
mission. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn
something new and interesting after having listened to WAER
and NPR. It is also the last bastion for art and culture on
the AM/FM dial.
What are your hobbies?
Most of my spare time is spent with my beautiful wife and
two wonderful daughters. I also enjoy writing (I've
unsuccessfully started 3 novels, written one award winning
local play and two volumes of poetry), watching movies,
cooking and listening to music.
What is your favorite quote?
I don't particularly find quotes useful in my life. I try
to live life with as much enjoyment and self-indulgence as I
can. If I were writing a script for my life, I'd be cast as
the good husband and father with subtle mood swings and
minor idiosyncrasies trying not to stumble down the steps
and out the door on my way to make a difference.
