Ron Ockert

Director of Programming & Operations

After performing as a professional bass guitarist for many years, Ron made the transition from musician to radio host in 1985.  He got his start in public radio at KSTK in Wrangell, Alaska, as a volunteer radio host.  After a few years he moved to Arcata, California, and worked at the Humboldt State University radio station.  Ron enjoyed working in public radio and moved to Guam in the early 1990s to help start a public radio station.  Once KPRG was up and running Ron saw a job opening at WAER and jumped at the opportunity.  He had heard of Syracuse University and the location was appealing, so he took the job in 1996 and has been at WAER ever since.

Ron describes himself as a "geeky" guy who loves figuring out how things work, which makes his job at WAER perfect for him.  He is the director of programming and operations at WAER, which means he is responsible for the "sound and smooth operation of the station".  Ron says he enjoys working at WAER because of the changing technology of radio and WAER's approach to it.

Ron says he loves public radio because it "has a soul" and provides listeners a closer version of the truth.  He also appreciates WAER and public radio because of its impact and involvement with the community and the diversity of music WAER offers its listeners.
