On Sunday, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced a bipartisan gun-safety framework to address ending the nation’s gun violence epidemic and previous inaction. The Senator says in a statement the legislation represents the first time in almost 30 years that Congress appears to be serious about taking meaningful action. Schumer referenced the terror children have faced. The legislation would limit the ability of potential mass shooters to quickly obtain assault rifles by establishing enhanced background checks for those under 21. The package also includes money to address the mental health crisis. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says in a statement: “The bipartisan gun safety announcement is an important step toward tackling the gun violence that plagues our communities, schools, hospitals and places of worship.”
