Residents in Marcellus are still recovering from a damaging storm just days ago, and this week for New York Hurricane Awareness Week, forecasters are warning Central New Yorkers about the inland impacts of the coastal events.

Hurricanes can bring heavy rain and strong winds to our region, according to the National Weather Service Binghamton's Robert Deal. He said the local impacts of hurricanes can mean heavy damage.

"We are not necessarily certain that it is gonna happen in a given year but if it does then impact could be significant," Deal said.

Deal said that could mean flooding and power outages. He said residents should prepare an emergency kit with food, water, and supplies, like a flashlight and batteries.
