At the direction of Gov. Kathy Hochul, the New York State Department of Labor will conduct a new study concerning the statewide employment rate specifically of transgender residents.

Hochul wants to find out if a disparity exists between the employment rates of transgender New Yorkers and that of other residents.

Hochul says in a statement that trans individuals, in particular within communities of color, have been known to face significant challenges.Hochul said she wants legislative solutions to eliminate any inequities.

This study will further the state's knowledge of issues unique to transgender employees and will help them to better tailor legislation to fit these specific needs. Previous studies have shown transgender persons face higher rates of unemployment, workplace discrimination, harassment, and violations.
