The City of Syracuse Fire Department marked the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week with a weekend open house and block party.

Hundreds gathered at Sheridan Park to tour Station 17 on Nichols Avenue, participate in the multiple fire safety discussions and admire onsite antique fire trucks and other apparatus on display.

At the event, Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds reminded visitors the importance of fire safety by greeting people with the phrase, “fire won’t wait; plan your escape.”

He also advised citizens to check their smoke detector batteries regularly by pressing and holding down the test button on the smoke detector. After a few seconds, there should be a loud siren from the smoke detector; if the sound is soft or nonexistent, it is time to replace the batteries.
