The City of Syracuse is considering surveillance technology for criminal investigations.

Automated license plate readers, or ALPR, could be utilized to aid with investigations of suspects after criminal activity has occurred, according to a news release from the city.

The Syracuse Police Department said the ALPR cameras will have the ability to capture still images of licenses plates in real time.

The surveillance technology will not be installed to identify drivers, but will collect continuous data and capture images every second, according to the city.

However, the city is collecting community input on the proposal. Individuals can submit comments through March 24. A surveillance technology public comment form is available on the city’s website.
