Moderate to low-income homeowners in New York State can get rebates for efficiency upgrades that can help them save significant money on utility bills. New York is the first state in the nation to offer the rebates on things such as insulation, electric heat pumps, electric heat pump water heaters and more.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm met with New York Governor Kathy Hochul to help launch the program. New York will distribute around $40 million for the program, aimed at those making up to 80% of the median income or owners of smaller multi-dwelling units, often rented to lower income residents.
Hochul says the grants will help the state reach climate goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
“As the first state in the nation to offer these Inflation Reduction Act rebates, we are expanding access to home improvements that will save New Yorkers money on their energy bills and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” Governor Hochul said. “Thanks to our strong partnership between New York State, the Biden Administration, and U.S. Department of Energy, we are making important progress to make the clean energy transition affordable for all New Yorkers.”
In addition to energy efficiency projects, the program is designed to help homeowners electrify heating and other energy uses to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, and in turn reducing emissions that contribute to climate change.
