Citizen Action of New York marked National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday in Syracuse by trying to reach unregistered voters at the Downtown Farmer’s Market. The day itself is a non-partisan civic holiday in the spirit of democracy and began 12 years ago. Citizen’s Action spokesperson Ursula Rozum said most of the people they met at the market are already prepared to vote in the Presidential Election with some exceptions.
“Yeah, we've had a handful of folks who are new voters, register young people. You know, people here maybe that are here with their parents or with their grandparents. People are grabbing forms to register. Maybe a friend or family member. And we think it's really important people start thinking about what's their plan to vote because we know that's one of the most important ways that folks get to the poll is when they have a plan.”
Rozum said there is absolutely no political agenda when they seek out new voters and they never discuss candidates. She says citizens have to do their own research.
“We tell people to get informed about who's running for office, where they stand about the issues that matter, but really, this is all about making sure that people are registered to vote and able to participate in our democracy and make their voices heard.”
There’s less than 50 days until the Presidential Election on November 5th. The registration deadline is October 26th.
