Layoffs announced at Amazon aren't expected to hit workers at the company's warehouse in Clay.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a memo this week that the company plans to cut positions in the next few weeks and more reductions could occur by mid-April.
In an email, a spokesperson told WAER that the "role eliminations are in our corporate workforce and have no impact on our operational teams running our fulfillment centers, delivery stations, etc."
The company says it wants to get leaner in what Jassy is calling an uncertain economy.
"However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount," said Jassy.
Jassy is also overseeing the company's expenses as it prepares for an economic downturn and slower development in its core retail division. Amazon has halted corporate hiring, canceled certain experimental projects, and slowed warehouse expansion.
Amazon now joins the list of other tech giants including Google, Meta, Twitter and Microsoft in laying off tens of thousands of employees in recent months due to declining sales and rising interest rates.
