Syracuse University’s plans to build a massive new dormitory directly across from the historic rose garden is getting blowback. According to Syracuse.com, the building on Ostrom Avenue and University Place will house 703 beds. The dormitory, spanning 272-thousand square feet, is slated to be the largest student housing building in Syracuse, with construction anticipated to last 22 months.
Gardening enthusiasts fear the building’s sheer size will cast a shadow on the rose garden and stunt the plant life. Historic preservationists are complaining that the plans require the demolition of an historic mansion on Comstock Avenue. Public hearings for the project are scheduled for Monday at City Hall.
