DMV warns drivers to be cautious of deer

It’s that time of year when drivers need to be on the lookout from deer. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles says deer are especially active at dawn and dusk when visibility may be reduced.

Drivers are urged to slow down if they see a deer and be aware that they can suddenly dart in front of you. Also, use your headlights to alert other drivers.

If a deer enters the roadway, hit your brakes but don’t swerve so you don’t hit other drivers. If you hit a deer, leave it alone, move your vehicle to a safe place and call the police.

The DMV says those driving in the Adirondacks need to be equally concerned about deer. In 2023, there were over 31,000 crashes with deer in the state.
