This weekend faith communities in Syracuse are being asked to emphasize the power of being invested in a students’ education by taking active roles as family members or as a mentor.  The first Interfaith Education Weekend runs Friday through Sunday and stresses parental involvement as a key to success at school and in life.

Diane Latta is a former teacher in the district.  She explains that families need to engage with their children education and to reach out to their support network at school.

“The more that you have that community, parent or family engaged with the system, albeit teachers, counselors, the school district to make happen what is known to be a good education.”

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh shared at Bethany Baptist Church that he’s also a full-time Dad and feels it’s a real challenge to balance both jobs.

SCSD Superintendent Jaime Alicea helped kick off Interfaith Education Weekend at Bethany Baptist Church.

"With two working parents in the house, it’s hard to stay engaged in their education and in their work, but it’s critical.  And we need to do everything we can to help all of our parents to get engaged and stay engaged… many of whom have many barriers.”

The Interfaith Education Weekend is being organized through a partnership with the Syracuse City-Wide High School Reunion Committee, Syracuse City Schools and all houses of faith.  To adopt a school or participate, call the school district at (315) 449-3552, extension 208.
