ITT Students Not Left in the Cold by Other Area Colleges

The swift closure of I-T-T Technical Institute in Liverpool has placed many students in a precarious situation.  Some other colleges are looking at the closing as an opportunity for students to apply.  The Dean of University College at Syracuse University, Bea Gonzalez says it’s very possible that some I-T-T class credits will transfer over.

“In some instances yes and that’s why it’s a very personal evaluation.  It’s based on what curriculum you were following at ITT.  But we do have a track record with transfer evaluations from ITT that do transfer to Syracuse University.”

Gonzalez says programs such as a Professional Studies Degree and Certificate in Knowledge management might appeal to the students. They’d  lead to careers such as information security analyst, database specialist or database manager.

Onondaga Community College is also rolling out the red carpet.  Academic Affairs Vice President Daria Willis wants students to take a look, even though they will suffer some setbacks.

“Because ITT is a for-profit institution and was not regionally accredited, we won’t be able to take some of those credits.  But eh good thing about it is we have different ways to fast-track students.  Some of our programs that align with their interests are CIS - computer information systems, computer science, architectural technology, interior design, art with graphic design and multi-media design.”

Willis says students could be in classes later this fall with “Second Start" in mid-October so they don’t stray from their goals.  Gonzalez is also concerned that some of I-T-T’s students might not continue.

“Adult learners go to school because they have a goal, they have a dream they’re trying to pursue.  SI wouldn’t want to stand by and let the ITT students, who would be a perfect match for Syracuse University, University college, lose out on an opportunity because of issues they had no control over.”

Information sessions will be held next week at University College and online on September 13th and 15th.  Onondaga Community College has a special event planned for September 17th.
