High school students at five Syracuse City Schools declared today what colleges they’ll be headed off to in the fall.  At Nottingham High School, students approached a table and signed a sheet of paper indicating their choice.  Counselor Tracey Daige says the school tries to ensure that every student has an opportunity prior to graduation to get enrolled into at least one college course.

“A lot of times they come in with ideas of what they would like to do and I think some of the experiences they have, the courses they take expose them to different careers and professions that they didn’t even think of in the beginning. Someone may come in saying I want to be a pediatrician but, then they take an environmental class and really find something that they love.”

Daige adds that most ninth graders they ask say they plan to attend college.  Senior Sylvia Rivera is eager to attend SUNY Delhi.

“First of all, their academics are amazing. I’ve heard a lot of beautiful things about their campus and when I went up there, it was just amazing and beautiful. I met my college roomate up there and I had the most amazing time.”

She plans to be a Psychologist and thinks college will also shape the person she ultimately becomes.

“I think college will help me grow as a person and (allow me to) be a better human and just get a better education than I’ve already had.”

Another Nottingham Senior, Tatiana Breland will be attending Monroe Community College in Rochester.  She plans to study to become a College History Professor and also further grow as a person.

“Hopefully give me a brighter view on life. Help me become successful, push me forward, give me the motivation to take on life.”
