Six Early Voting Locations Open to Onondaga County Voters Starting Saturday

Onondaga County voters will be able to head to the polls at six locations starting this Saturday as early voting gets underway.  This option for casting a ballot continues for nine days, through two weekends before election day. 

Democratic elections commissioner Dustin Czarny says they’ve tried to make the sites as accessible as possible.

“We pickled sites that are North, East, West and South in the county and one in the north side of the city, one in the south side of the city, to try and get these sites as close to the population centers and also some of the rural voters as well, to get people to travel as little as possible.”

Republican elections commissioner Michele Sardo agrees.

“We wanted to make sure (sites) were spread out throughout Onondaga County and that it’s demographically spread out,” she said. “There are sites in the towns and ones in the city.  Anyone can vote with early voting at any of those sites.  If you’re coming home from work, you can stop at whatever is closest to you.”

Elections officials say there are numerous protections in place to keep people from voting more than once. For example, if they already sent in an absentee ballot and then tried to cast a vote in person, they would be asked to cast a provisional ballot. Health and safety precautions will also be observed such as sanitizing of voting spaces and social distancing.

Even as early voting gets underway at the polls, there’s still time to apply for, receive, and return absentee ballots. The application deadline is Oct. 27 if applying via mail, online, email, or fax.  Voters can request an absentee ballot in person until Monday, Nov. 2. Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3, and arrive by Nov. 10 to be counted. All New York voters can apply for an absentee ballot here.
