Speed Of COVID-19 Vaccinations In Onondaga County Dependent On Supply

COVID-19 vaccinations are going as fast as supply will allow in Onondaga County. The country received 3,600 doses directly from the state Tuesday, and County Executive Ryan McMahon said they’ll have the capacity to vaccinate 1,260 people per day for the next four days.

After that, the county will again be out of vaccine. McMahon said when they’ve used what they’ve been given, they will ask for more.

“Whether the supply chain by the manufactures has caught up to that or not is out of my control,” said McMahon. “But what is in our control is that we have the pods [points of distribution] ready to be very efficient and move very quickly.”

Registration for those eligible to receive the vaccine is open on the county’s website. The current point of distribution is in downtown Syracuse at the War Memorial. McMahon said if there’s enough supply that the first pod reaches max capacity, they are ready to open a second one in another easily accessible location.

“Most likely Shoppingtown will most likely be the second site. And then third and fourth site, we’ll get to those when we need to. But great parking, very easy, people know where to go. It’s just an easier way to do this,” said McMahon.

McMahon said he is not sure when the next phase will start, but they will be ready when it does. It largely depends on if manufacturers can increase their production, because the next phase expands eligibility to many more people than the first. The decision to start the next phase is up to the Governor.
