Syracuse Community Raising Funds for Proposed Dog Park

Syracuse is hopefully getting its first dog park after a Syracuse native saw the potential in an old, beat-up ballfield on the outskirts of Syracuse University.  Joshua Wilcox is a graduate student in Urban Planning at University at Buffalo and will be a part of the designing process for our canine companions.

“From what I know it will be the first completely fenced in dog park. There will be a double gate and entry for it from what’s been proposed so far. It’s a really well drained field so it really makes a perfect spot.” said Wilcox.

Wilcox ran the idea past Councilor Michael Greene and now the idea is taking off.

“The fundraiser which is looking for $27,000 would go to put fencing in the area so that the area’s enclosed. It would have a separate area for large dogs and small dogs. It would put crushed stone on the ground so that it doesn’t get muddy. We’d also be looking to add benching for seating as well as hopefully a water fountain for both dogs and people.”  said Wilcox.

Two dog owners, Lisa Sacco and Steven Morris, voiced their opinions on the unique form of fundraising to develop the park.

“It’s unfortunate we have to rely on a community to do stuff like this. So hopefully we’ll get some assistance from the federal government to help the municipalities.” said Sacco.

“I think it’s cool, just sort of people putting their money towards projects that they think would be beneficial to them in the community.” said Morris.

The location is currently known as Ormand Spencer Park.   The Syracuse Parks Department will be hosting an online forum looking for community feedback on the plan on October 1st at 6 pm.
