Syracuse Falls to Pitt

cuse.com

The struggles continued for the Syracuse offense last night against Pitt in a 27-20 loss at home. Pittsburgh got the best of the ACC rivalry this time around, a rivalry that has been around since 1955. These two teams have played every year since and Pittsburgh seizes control of the series since then as Syracuse has gone 29-35-1.

Fans have heard it before from this Syracuse offense…sacks, sacks, and, well more sacks. Lat night the Orange offensive line surrendered a season high nine sacks. Since 2005, Syracuse is the only FBS school to allow 8 or more sacks in consecutive games against power 5 schools.

Unfortunately, the beatings DeVito took in the pocket caught up to him last night as he left the game in the middle of the second quarter with an injury.

Fortunately for the Orange, DeVito did pass the NCAA concussion protocol, so the injury does not appear to be long term. Prior to leaving the game, DeVito played a subpar game throwing under 50% and for only 101 yards.

Clayton Welch was the man that took over for the Orange under center. Syracuse fans have seen brief stints from the senior earlier this year, but received the most playing time tonight than he has all season. After being thrown into the game, in the middle of the second quarter, Welch threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns, including a 94-yard touchdown reception from Taj Harris. Welch also showed similar skills of former Syracuse QB, Eric Dungey, as he rushed for 36 yards.

Andre Cisco made his return to the starting lineup, but did not prove to be much of a factor in his return as Pitt’s quarterback, Kenny Pickett, threw for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.

With some things to clean up in the next coming weeks, the Orange will play another struggling team next week, the Florida State Seminoles, on the road. It has not been determined if Clayton Welch or Tommy DeVito will start next week, but head coach Dino Baber did stress in his press conference that the team has to “reevaluate” their options next week.
