Syracuse got demolished 58-27 by ACC foe Boston College this afternoon at the Dome. The Eagles just 4-4 heading into Saturday, gained a program record 691 totals yards against the Orange.
It has been a disappointing year for Dino Babers’s football team, but today might have marked the absolute low point in the 2019-2020 campaign. Boston College scored almost every time they touched the football which had the Syracuse offense playing catchup for most of the afternoon.
Despite the throttling, things actually looked pretty promising for Syracuse in the first quarter. Their offense went 84 yards on their opening drive and then cashed in off of two Boston College turnovers. It was starting to feel like a basketball game was about to breakout in the Dome with Syracuse leading 17-10 after the first quarter.
The Orange couldn’t keep their finger on the dyke in the second quarter as the BC offense gashed syracuse for five touchdowns.
The Eagles passing attack, which had been virtually nonexistent, through the first eight games of the season accounted for three touchdowns. BC running backs A.J. Dillion and David Bailey accounted for the other two Eagle touchdowns with runs of 51-yard and 74- yards, respectively.
Syracuse quarterback, Tommy Devito, had another Jykle and Hyde performance. His 26-yard strike to Triston Jackson in the first quarter was one of his best throws of the season. The first year starter looked healthy and confident, but the bubble burst when Devito awkwardly fumbled at the end of the first half while trying to reach for a first down.
Despite being well past the line of scrimmage, Devito appeared to be caught between throwing the ball and stretching for a first down. The hesitation proved to be costly as the Eagles quickly cashed in the turnover for seven points with 26 seconds left in the half.
BC took their 44-20 lead into the half and never looked back.
Eight Boston College touchdowns later and the Orange are now 0-5 in ACC play.
Overall, the Orange fall to 3-6 with Duke, Louisville and Wake Forest on the horizon. They’ll have to win out to become bowl eligible.
