Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Crushes Virginia 20-10

Cuse.com

This was a revenge game for #9 Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse.

After a stunning season opening loss to Army, the Orange won in just as stunning fashion Saturday, trouncing #3 Virginia 20-10 for its first victory of the 2021 season. It was raining goals for SU Saturday night in the Carrier Dome.

"We needed that win,” said Head Coach John Desko. “The guys did a great adjustment this week and all the coaches did a great job.”

It was quite the adjustment from the seven-goal defeat to the Army just six days prior.

Desko’s team was tested early on. Virginia’s offense connected on five of its first seven shots on goal into the back of the net. That allowed the Cavaliers to jump out to an early 5-3 lead. But that’s when the Orange turned a corner and found their rhythm offensively. SU notched four unanswered goals to take a two goal lead themselves, 7-5.

UVA responded to tie the game at seven, but those would be the only two scores they would get in the second frame. One game after Drake Porter allowed the most goals in his SU career against Army, the goalie and the Cuse defense locked down Virginia en route to the lowest scoring Cavaliers second quarter through four games this season. Meanwhile John Desko’s offense had seven different players score through 30 minutes, and the Orange took a 9-7 lead into the break.

Jakob Phaup, shown above, was crucial to the win for the Orange, winning 22 of 33 faceoffs.

Syracuse dominated possession in the third quarter, winning nine of ten faceoffs. Jakob Phaup helped the Orange control the game by winning 22 of 33 faceoffs. From there, the goal scorers did the rest.

SU striked for seven goals in the period, including a pair from midfielder Tucker Dordevic. Dordevic, Brendan Curry, Owen Hiltz, and Stephen Rehfuss led SU for the game with three goals apiece. Curry’s seven points were a team-best.

After the Army loss, Tucker Dordevic said the team needed to “change how we shoot” and had to “clean it up.”

Those adjustments seemed as transparent as ever. Nine different players on SU notched goals in the win over the Cavaliers.

The Orange poured on four more goals in the fourth quarter, the icing on the cake in a historic 10-goal victory, the largest margin of victory in the history of the matchup between the two programs.

John Desko’s team returns to the Carrier Dome when the Orange faceoff with Vermont in the first ever meeting between the programs Saturday at 1pm. Countdown to faceoff begins on WAER at 12:30.
