Syracuse vs. Cornell: The Boeheim Bowl

Cuse.com

The Syracuse Orange (2-1) will welcome Jimmy Boeheim and the Cornell Big Red (1-3) into the Dome Wednesday night at 7:30. Coach Boehiem’s oldest son, Jimmy, is the leading scorer for the Big Red averaging 15.3 points-per-game.

It will be a no love lost matchup for coach Boehiem whose team will be looking to string together their third consecutive win of the season.

The focus will once again be on Syracuse freshman guard, Joe Girard III, who got the nod for his first collegiate start Saturday against Seattle. In a 89-67 winning effort, Girard III posted an impressive 24 points, going 5-6 form deep. Wednesday night versus a weak Cornell team will pose another opportunity for the freshman to gain more confidence quarterbacking the Orange offense.

Cornell, who has yet to start Ivy League play, has had a rough start to their season through four games. Two of their loses, to both New Jersey Institute of Technology and Bryant, came by just one point. A glaring weakness in the Big Red is their bench which has tallied just 67 total points all season.

One of the bright spots for Cornell has been junior forward, Jimmy Boeheim. Listed at 6’8 on Cornell’s website, Jimmy has started all four games for the Big Red and has been the team’s leading scorer in two of those contests.

In comparison, his brother, Buddy, is averaging 11.3 points-per-game and has started all three games for the Orange this season. Buddy (by his standards) is off to a slow start from three this season, shooting 30% on the year.

In last year’s Boeheim Bowl the Orange won 63-55 and neither of coach Boeheim’s sons started. This year, both Jimmy and Buddy are expected to start and have an impact on the game which might make Thanksgiving just a tad awkward.
