absentee ballots

Many of the ways ballot access was expanded in the 2020 election could make their way into permanent state law.  The New York Senate approved a package of bills that would address getting – and counting – absentee ballots.  Senator Rachel May says all the measures try to get more people involved.

"The problem is our elections are decided by too few people.  Anything that makes it easier for people to vote is a good thing so we know what the will of the people is.  Several states have mail only voting, and they have some of the highest voter participation rates."

About half of the remaining 30,000 remaining absentee ballots in Onondaga County were reviewed and scanned Monday as the board of elections resumed counting after a two-week delay.  The process was halted after about a dozen cases of COVID-19 among employees paused operations four days after it began.

The Onondaga County Board of Elections is expected to be back at full strength on Monday to count the remaining 30,000 absentee ballots.  Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny is ready.

The review and counting of Onondaga County’s 27,000 remaining absentee ballots won’t resume for another two weeks due to eight additional cases of COVID-19 among employees.  The exposure started with one worker who hasn’t been at the office since November 5th, but was in contact with about 30 other colleagues.

The process of counting 57,000 absentee ballots has begun in Onondaga County, something that could take until this time next week.  WAER News stopped by the Board of Elections on day one to see how the process works.

Onondaga County Elections officials will begin counting more than 57,000 absentee ballots Tuesday, which will eventually determine the outcome of races that still have no clear winner.

Congressmember John Katko says President Trump needs to “move on” from his claims of fraud in the absentee ballot count unless he can produce evidence to back up those claims.  The president unspooled numerous unfounded conspiracies and incorrect information last night as Joe Biden gained more votes in key states.

Absentee ballots are still arriving at the Onondaga County Board of Elections, and commissioners are preparing to spend more than a week counting them.  Democratic Commissioner Dustin Czarny reminds us that it’s normal to count ballots after the election because military voters have regularly sent in their ballots from overseas.

Election results in the Central New York area mirror those nationwide … some paint a clear picture while others remain blurred.  Voters cast their ballots for congressional candidates, as well as those for state senate and assembly seats, and other local officials.
