ACC

Syracuse and Duke have treated college basketball fans to quite a few memorable games since the two became ACC rivals. And while that has made for some amazing moments, Syracuse still has a few old Big East foes that renew their rivalry every season.

One of those teams is the Pittsbrugh Panthers.  The last few seasons though, Pittsburgh has suffered a steep decline and have struggled to remain relevant. This week on The Best of WAER Sports Podcast, WAER's JD Raucci explains that new head coach Jeff Capel has things headed in the right direction.

On the heels of taking down top-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Syracuse returned home to the Carrier Dome and defeated Pittsburgh, 74-63.

Syracuse (13-5, 4-1) came into the game with all the confidence in the world and it showed, as the defense held Pittsburgh (12-6, 2-3) to just 63 points in the second straight win for the Orange. Meanwhile, the Panthers were coming off an impressive victory themselves, defeating No. 11 Florida State 75-62 on Monday.

Over the last five years or so you can probably think of  a few memorable  men's college basketball games between Syracuse and North Carolina. What about college football? If you're having a hard time thinking of a recent one you're not alone.

WAER's Connor Federico tells us that this past weekend was the first time Syracuse and North Carolina went head-to-head in football in over five years. But that doesn't mean their meetings havent't been remarkable in their own right.

It was the sixth time the Syracuse university Men's Lacrosse team would find itself in a one-goal game this season.  But unlike four of the previous five, SU didn't find a way to pull it out at the end.  Virginia downed the Orange 11-10 Friday Night in a game that could have implications on where - or if - the team plays in the NCAA championships.

#7 Syracuse Looks to Stay Unbeaten in the ACC

For most college lacrosse teams, conference play tends to be a struggle. Then again, Syracuse (6-4, 3-0 ACC) is not your typical lacrosse squad.

The Orange has had great triumphs in ACC play, but have struggled in non-conference competitions. After losing 13-8 to Cornell last Tuesday, Syracuse dropped 3-4 against non-ACC opponents. Luckily for them, they face a familiar ACC team this weekend. The Orange play host to a struggling North Carolina (6-6, 0-2 ACC) team on Saturday.

It was a packed Loud House in Central New York, but Syracuse (18-10, 7-8) fell 78-74 to North Carolina (22-7, 11-5) in a back and forth affair. Frustrating does not do the result justice.

Frank Howard, Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett scored 66 of the Orange's 74 points. The story tonight is the same as it has been all season, 'Cuse has only three players making significant offensive contributions. Despite all the scoring, Syracuse struggled to defend inside for the majority of the game.

This week on The Best of WAER Sports Podcast we'll reunite with a familiar name around Syracuse University. In the 90s, many teams led by Jim Boeheim were centered around toughness. Ryan Blackwell often times was the one to exhibit that toughness. Today he's leading in another way, as the head coach of the Liverpool Boys High School Basketball team.

Also this week on the podcast WAER's Jonathon Hoppe examines of the rich history of Wake Forest sending successful players to the NBA.

If Jim Boeheim is looking for any positive takeaways on the court, he will have a hard time finding one.

Despite the biggest crowd this season in all of college basketball, the 27,083 attendees could not push Syracuse (15-8, 4-6) past second-ranked Virginia (22-1, 11-0).

Coming off a disappointing 55-51 loss to Georgia Tech, Syracuse knew the path to the big dance was narrowing. The first team in their way was the red-hot Virginia Cavaliers. With the top-ranked defense in the country, the Cavaliers managed to reel off 13 straight wins and had yet to lose an ACC contest.

Like it or not conference realignment is a part of big time college athletics. In 2013 conference realignment sent ripples through the Big East as Syracuse, Connecticut and other schools parted ways with the conference.

Leaving a conference after so many years had schools like Syracuse and Connecticut wondering what life after the Big East would look like. WAER's Nate Dickinson examines the success and struggles for the two programs so far.
