City Voters Approve Proposition for Independent Redistricting. What's Next?

Voters in Syracuse paved the way to possibly having their Common Council districts reshaped for the 2023 Election.  More than 11,000 residents voted in favor of Proposition One… that’s a 76% to 23% margin.  Common Council President Helen Hudson says the process is ten years overdue, so she appreciates the strong support from residents.

The Democratic candidate for Onondaga county executive says it’s time the county’s leaders follow the city’s lead and commit to the independent redistricting of its 15 legislative districts.  Tony Malavenda praises the common council for voting this week to amend the city charter to establish a non-partisan group of residents to draw district boundaries.

Syracuse Common Councilors Monday took what’s being seen as a bold first step to give city residents the power to draw the boundaries of the five council districts.  The 7 to 1 vote to change the city charter makes Syracuse the first city east of the Mississippi to allow independent, non-partisan redistricting.
