Congress Member John Katko would like to see the President and Congress stop the policy of separating children from families trying to enter the US at its borders, he said in a release Monday.  He said he supports border security, as long as it's done, 

"...in a humane way that preserves family unity and keeps young children safe," he added.

Local activists want Customs and Border Patrol out of Central New York transit.  About two dozen members and supporters of the Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network rallied in front of the Regional Transportation Center today demanding that companies deny Customs the ability to raid buses and trains for undocumented immigrants.  Attorney Herve Comeau says Customs enforces raids selectively, targeting people they think “look foreign.”

An Associate Political Science Professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School says both Republicans and Democrats should be able to come together on reaching an immigration deal.  Elizabeth Cohen thinks that President Trump isn’t providing a clear picture of what U.S. immigration really resembles and she feels that he continues to portray immigrants as criminals.

A professor of government at Cornell University has mixed reviews of President Trump’s State of the Union Address Tuesday night. Professor Elizabeth Sanders says that Trump’s speech was successful overall, but his sincerity is still in question.

"For Trump I thought it was a good speech.  The big question is whether he means it and whether he will put some kind of mobilization skills to work, which he hasn't demonstrated before, to get his own party and segments of the other parties to support these things." 

DACA Recipients Call On Katko To Support A 'Clean' Dream Act

Immigrants and their supporters are calling on Congressman John Katko to support legislation for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA.They say they want Katko to support a “clean” Dream Act. Rebecca Fuentes is with United We Dream.

 

"The federal govt is proposing legislation but it’s tied to more enforcement, a wall. We don’t want that, we want it clean."

Chants for freedom reverberated through the streets of downtown Syracuse Thursday as dozens of activists gathered to urge Congressmember John Katko to co-sponsor what they call a "Clean Dream Act." It’s part of a coordinated nationwide Dream Act Week of Action while Congress is in recess.  Gustavo Andrade is director of leadership development with United We Dream.

Wednesday marked the first day of school for the students of the Syracuse City School District. Mayor Stephanie Miner and Superintendent Jaime Alicea visited classrooms at Franklin Elementary to encourage students to start their school year off on the right foot.  Mayor Miner generated some excitement for learning how to read with her reading challenge.

Immigrants’ rights activists gathered in front of Rep. John Katko’s office today protesting the Trump administration’s planned repeal of DACA.  The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program provides protection for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, including an estimated 20,000 in Upstate New York.  New York Immigration Coalition representative Meghan Maloney de Valdivar believes that DACA recipients must rely on the hard work and resourcefulness that got the order signed to begin with.
