Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she has an idea that could help dairy farmers struggling with historically low milk prices.  Last week, we brought you the story of a fourth generation Skaneateles dairy farmer who’s considering shutting down.  The senator’s legislation would create a new price floor for milk.

Some Central New York dairy farmers are facing such difficult times that they’re considering leaving the business altogether.  A combination of persistently low prices of milk and rising labor costs are forcing long-time farmers to make some tough decisions.

For Mark Tucker, dairy farming is all he’s known.  He’s been working his family’s fourth generation farm in Skaneateles full time for over 40 years.

A new report from the Workers' Center of Central New York shows  that undocumented Mexican and Central American workers at dozens of upstate dairy farms face grueling work schedules and dangerous working conditions.  The study's release coincides with the beginning of National Dairy Month, and is called "Milked: Immigrant Dairy Farmworkers in New York State."  Report co-author Gretchen Purser is an Assistant professor of sociology at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.

The cows responsible for helping to produce Milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream are the stars on the 40th Anniversary of Dairy Day at the New York State Fair.  Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball says the Fair showcases the importance of the industry and how it touches the world.

“It’s obvious at the Fair.  You look at the butter sculpture, you can walk through the barns see the cows, go to the birthing tent.  You come face to face with agriculture.”

There’s growing concern among Central New York dairy farmers that Canada is considering changing trade rules that could restrict its import of U.S. milk products.   

  Senator Chuck Schumer stopped by Cayuga Milk Ingredients in Auburn today, a conglomerate of 25 dairy farms doing $25 million in yearly sales to Canada alone.  Schumer says the proposal would be harmful.
