Local Job Fair Connects Job Seekers with Retail Employers for Upcoming Holiday Season

Local residents dressed to impress today as they either applied for jobs with on-the-spot interviews or inquired about opportunities at the Southwest Community Center in Syracuse.  Build To Work Program Coordinator Twiggy Billue says the majority of companies are looking to hire for retail and customer service jobs.

An upcoming job fair in Syracuse aims to address one of the biggest challenges facing employers…finding a qualified candidate for the job.  A variety of companies will be on hand later this week in hopes of finding a match.   Twiggy Billue is program coordinator for Build to Work at Jubilee Homes, which is hosting the fair.

In three days,  a Price Rite supermarket will open on  Syracuse's south side in a neighborhood that hasn't seen a full-service grocery store in nearly 47 years.  

Jubilee Homes founder Walt Dixie said years of persistence and a bit of luck will finally culminate in Sunday's ribbon cutting at the store on the corner of South and Bellevue Avenues. He said building the relationship with Price Rite was critical.

  Long-time advocates of Syracuse’s south side are clearly welcoming the news about plans to finally open a full service supermarket in the impoverished neighborhood. PriceRite will begin construction this spring on a 35,000 foot store at the corner of South and Bellevue avenues.

  One of the stands at the Downtown Farmers Market is doing a lot more than helping someone make a salad or get food for the family.  A group of teenagers working there is getting a glimpse of farming, business and even entrepreneurship.
