The Loop the Lake Trail is closer to expanding further east of the St. Joseph’s Lakeview Amphitheater this summer with a continuation of a solar light pathway.

The Onondaga County Ways and Means committee voted five to one in favor of accepting a one million dollar state grant to purchase 150 additional solar lights. They would be installed as construction of the West side-trail-extension begins. County Environment Manager Travis Glazier says the extension from the existing trail will likely begin sometime this year.

The founder and organizer of the Syracuse Jazzfest confirmed Thursday, the event is cancelled for 2018 – a year after celebrating its 35th anniversary.  Frank Malfitano says money issues prevented him from putting on an event of the caliber of previous years.

Music fans who go to see Bob Dylan Sunday at the Lakeview Amphitheater might very well hear songs written by Syracuse native Son Jimmy Van Heusen.  Dylan has been playing music from Van Heusen’s heyday, the Great American Songbook, on recent albums and in recent concerts.

Brook Babcock is Van Heusen’s great nephew and oversees the music catalog.  He says Dylan has recorded 10 Van Heusen songs n recent albums, 8 on the latest release called Triplicate, a three-record vinyl set.

Lakeview Amphitheater Concertgoers in Syracuse will notice some improvements this year and more is on the way.  All of the internal walkways and a centrally located A.D.A. parking lot with 125 spaces have been paved to allow for a better experience for those who have mobility issues.  Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says a select number of boaters will be able to arrive to the shows and dock.

Onondaga County Lawmakers reviewed the County Executive’s budget proposal for parks and recreation.  Tucked inside is a substantial $75,000 that isn’t specifically named but was presumed to be budgeted for Syracuse Jazz Fest.   There appears to be an indication that the funding could also be tied to a change in venue.

  WAER News embarked on a three-part series looking deeper into the significance and impact of the new Lakeview Amphitheater.  Thursday's concert is the only one planned for this year; a full slate is expected to be scheduled for 2016.  

CONVINCING CRITICS

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney still finds herself trying to convince skeptics that the amphitheater can be a boost to the local economy.  She says the concert…and the opening of the grounds to the public for the first time, might be a starting point to win over critics.

A furious pace of construction by hundreds of workers over the past several months has resulted in the on-time completion of a $49.3 million amphitheater on the western shore of Onondaga Lake.  County Executive Joanie Mahoney says she was fully aware of the risks of the aggressive construction timeline when work began last November, but really took off in mid-February.  Now, the county is the official owner of a completed Lakeview Amphitheater.
