Activists are using the occasion of Independence Day to urge Onondaga County and Central New Yorkers to protect the dozens of bald eagles which call Onondaga Lake home during the winter.

Two professors studying the presence and impact of two toxic chemicals found in and around Onondaga Lake say more testing needs to be done to determine the concentrations on Murphy’s Island, where the county plans to extend a recreation trail.  So far, research indicates a relatively low risk if the contaminants are beneath the surface.

Onondaga County Lawmakers Monday temporarily put off a vote on extending the loop the lake trail over what’s called Murphy’s Island. The isolated and heavily contaminated 1.6 acre site sits behind the railroad tracks that run past Destiny USA. Activist Lindsey Speer was among those who praised the delay, and urged lawmakers to take their time.

The future of the trail around Onondaga Lake is taking shape.  Onondaga County Lawmakers are considering how the last piece of that path will be built.  Legislature Chair Ryan McMahon says it hinges on a re-building of Onondaga Lake Parkway.
