New York State’s prison system is an overlooked hotspot for the COVID-19 virus, according to prison reform group New Yorkers United for Justice.  They’re calling for a range of changes to decrease its spread. Executive Director Alexander Horwitz reported that December saw a 71% increase in positive cases in prisons, with now more than 3,000 positive cases.

In New York State, like in most of the nation, the COVID-19 vaccination roll out is behind schedule, and Governor Andrew Cuomo is threatening to withhold new  doses from hospitals that do not speed things up.


Facebook Senator Gillibrand

A federal program that helped out many families who had to spend sick time at home during the coronavirus pandemic is about to run out at the end of the year.  New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is bringing attention to paid leave trying to extend it.

“It gave 22 million workers nationwide the ability to stay home when they are sick.  That’s a public health necessity when combatting an infectious disease like the coronavirus.  And it made a huge difference.”

This election year has already been unlike any other due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At least ninety-five million Americans have voted before Election Day thanks to early voting and mail-in ballots; which makes up more than two-thirds of the total voter turnout for the 2016 presidential election. Deputy Director for League of Women Voters in New York State, Jennifer Wilson, says this large turnout before the election shows how useful early voting can be.

Environmentalists and clean water advocates are celebrating passage of a bill that can help prevent the wastewater from hydro-fracking from getting into New York’s waterways.  There had been a loophole in clean water rules that prohibited any water used in oil or gas exploration from being categorized as hazardous. 


NY Farm Bureau Reports on Economic Fallout

The COVID-19 economic fallout has not spared the farming industry.  The New York Farm Bureau estimates 65% of farms have taken a financial hit due to the global pandemic.  It’s not because the demand for all farm products has slowed.

Nearly one in every eight New Yorkers might have contracted the coronavirus, according to preliminary results from a series of antibody tests conducted by the state in recent weeks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.

Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order Saturday moving the presidential primary from April 28th to June 23rd, in the wake of health concerns from the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The move aligns the voting for presidential nominees to the same date voters would be choosing congressional and legislature nominees in the various parties.
