Onondaga County homeowners are being asked to shell out an additional $30 next year to help cover the cost of repairing and maintaining the aging sewer system as part of Joanie Mahoney’s 2019 budget proposal.  She delivered her $1.3 billion spending plan to lawmakers Friday.

  Local residents who like the idea of a trail around Onondaga Lake might like to know about a federal program that could help complete it.  After years of a construction stalemate, Onondaga County has applied for a federal transportation grant that would pay most of the cost of finishing the 13-mile loop.  Senator Chuck Schumer was in Syracuse on Monday touting the benefits of completing the trail.

  People who make a prank call to the police department could face more serious punishment. Cases such as the fake bomb threat last week at the John Mulroy Civic Center would be regarded as a new federal crime.

Unlike 2011, Onondaga County voters will actually have someone other than Joanie Mahoney to choose from for county executive on the ballot this November.  The county democratic committee Thursday evening designated two-time sheriff candidate Toby Shelley to challenge two-term incumbent Republican Mahoney.
