Senator Chuck Schumer stopped at Vera House today to call on senate leadership to allow a vote on the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA.  The legislation expired eight months ago, and the House already passed a five-year extension. 


CNY Survivors of Abuse Prepare for Their Options Under Child Victims Act

Survivors of Sexual Assault and their Allies met today at Vera House to celebrate Monday’s passing of the Child Victims Act. The act will increase the statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse to file civil and criminal action.


Experts: Human Trafficking Cases Increase in CNY with Opioids

Experts who handle youth human trafficking cases in Onondaga County say that the illegal activity continues to be on the rise, and that the opioid epidemic seems to be fueling the problem.

The Homeland Security roundtable discussion at the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center shared the disturbing local trends of trafficking and drugs.  Congressmember John Katko was surprised to learn of the correlation.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner is getting behind a program she says could prevent families from becoming homeless.  A state proposal called The Home Stability Support program would provide a new rent supplement for those who are eligible for public assistance.  Miner says the program could expand upon the efforts of the city and county to keep families out of shelters and off the streets.

  Syracuse police arrested more than 1300 people for domestic violence last year...and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies took in another 900.  Those are some of the figures that paint the picture in Vera House's annual report to the community on Domestic Violence.  Monday's release of the report focused on the wide range of victims...and growing services to help.

  Anyone who watches television in Central New York knows who Billy Fuccillo is. But today, he was in the limelight for another reason... that was also pretty huge. 

"With all the things going on around the country with domestic violence, we were able to kick in and contribute over 200k to domestic violence organizations," Fuccillo said. 

  Some Central New York colleges and universities might be paying close attention to a new California law aimed at curbing sexual assault. The law redefines the rules regarding sexual consent at public universities in the state. Vera House Executive Director Randi Bregman says that by shifting the scrutiny off of the victim… this law could encourage more women to report sexual assault.
