Environmentalists and clean water advocates are celebrating passage of a bill that can help prevent the wastewater from hydro-fracking from getting into New York’s waterways.  There had been a loophole in clean water rules that prohibited any water used in oil or gas exploration from being categorized as hazardous.

Central New York’s delegation of state lawmakers has been busy in Albany this week voting on several pieces of legislation aimed at reforming police conduct.  The final bills should clear the senate Wednesday. 

New York is one of the first to take up such measures amid protests here and nationwide calling for change after the death of George Floyd.  Most of the bills have been passed by the assembly for years, and this is the first time they’re seeing daylight in the senate.  Senator Rachel May says people of all stripes seem to be questioning police behavior.

Could New York use a New Deal-style program to bring jobs to the flood of people who lost employment due to the COVID-19 pandemic?  Senator Rachel May is taking the idea to the State Senate, while Assembly Member Patricia Fahy introduced the bill in the house.

Plans for the Central New York STEAM School are still on track despite the COVID-19 pandemic and looming state budget deficits.  Syracuse City Schools Superintendent Jaime Alicea joined Senator Rachel May Thursday for a virtual update on the project.

A new recreational feature on Onondaga Lake is being seen as a way to get people more connected with the waterway, while honoring one of its champions.  The Ken Lynch Boat Launch not only indicates progress in the lake’s cleanup, officials say, it also shows an increase in the lake’s value to the community.
