Survivors of Sexual Assault and their Allies met today at Vera House to celebrate Monday’s passing of the Child Victims Act. The act will increase the statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse to file civil and criminal action.

Vera House unveiled a new initiative today designed to make Syracuse’s nightlife scene safer. The program entitled “Raise The Bar” works with establishments where alcohol is served to train staff on how to prevent sexual aggression and violence.


Protesters gather in Syracuse to Oppose Kavanaugh as Hearings Take Place in Washington

Nearly two dozen protesters gathered outside the Federal Building in Syracuse Thursday to protest the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and show their support for victims of sexual violence.

The protesters engaged in coordinated chats such as "Kava-NO!" and "Time's Up."

The ongoing debate over reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, in Congress appears to have taken on new meaning in light of the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.  Those who advocate on behalf of survivors of sexual assault in Central New York feels lawmaker’s support of a long-term solution will speak volumes about where they stand.

Experts: Human Trafficking Cases Increase in CNY with Opioids

Experts who handle youth human trafficking cases in Onondaga County say that the illegal activity continues to be on the rise, and that the opioid epidemic seems to be fueling the problem.

The Homeland Security roundtable discussion at the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center shared the disturbing local trends of trafficking and drugs.  Congressmember John Katko was surprised to learn of the correlation.

Domestic violence experts emphasize that a sexual assault occurs every 98 seconds in America.  

This weekend, Vera House of Syracuse created a display as part of the Clothesline Project at Destiny Mall honoring survivors of sexual assault and abuse. At the unveiling ceremony this weekend, survivors spoke about their experiences and used their stories to empower others.

Organizations in Syracuse have joined forces in an international effort to bring awareness to gender-based violence.  The 16-day effort by the Near East Foundation and its partners, Planned Parenthood, Vera House and New Feminists for Justice, led from International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Nov.

A night of dinner, live music and dancing will raise funds for Vera House in December as they continue to support people with services who are going through domestic violence.  This year will mark the 26th annual “New Beginnings” GalaThe organization supports victims of domestic violence.  Executive Director Randi Bregman says the event used to be known as “Home for the Holidays.”

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner is getting behind a program she says could prevent families from becoming homeless.  A state proposal called The Home Stability Support program would provide a new rent supplement for those who are eligible for public assistance.  Miner says the program could expand upon the efforts of the city and county to keep families out of shelters and off the streets.
