Onondaga County's Health Department is reporting a cluster in opioid overdoses over a 24-hour period.
According to the County's overdose tracking system, there were 25 overdoses in the City of Syracuse and surrounding areas during that time frame this week. In a news release, the county health department said the increase could be linked to fentanyl-laced spike or spice, an illegal synthetic drug.
“While overdoses are on the rise in Onondaga County, we can decrease the risk of fatal overdoses if members of the public learn the signs of overdose, call 911 immediately if someone is unresponsive, and if more people carry the overdose reversal drug naloxone (Narcan)," Onondaga County Commissioner of Health Dr. Kathryn Anderson said in the release.
The overdose reversal drug Narcan and fentanyl test strips are available by calling or texting a confidential county request line at 315-418-5365.
