Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and State Senators Rachel May and John Mannion toured Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing following years of concern over residents’ living conditions. Ownership and management of the nursing center have admitted that there are significant issues that need to be fixed.
Walsh said that the city is now working with the leadership at Van Duyn. He sympathizes with their staffing challenges, but said there is “no excuse” for the conditions in which residents are living.
“We have grave concerns about the conditions there. What has happened to many of our neighbors living there is completely unacceptable.”
The mayor says the ownership, city, and New York Department of Health are committed to improving conditions at the center.
