The Syracuse Police Department is offering a hiring bonus to motivate officers throughout New York State to transfer to the agency. Officers who make the lateral leap can receive $10,000.

A news release from the department said new transfers will receive half after they complete training and the reminder after a probationary period.

Current SPD officers that refer new transfers may receive a $500 bonus.

The SPD has been facing staff shortages, which has been a frequent concern among police officials.

Newly appointed Police Chief Joe Cecile cited the issue at a Friday news conference announcing his promotion. Cecile was picked for the role shortly after Kenton Buckner stepped down as chief.
