The State DEC is reminding drivers to keep their eyes out for a certain reptile that could be crossing the road. That’s because it’s “Turtles Crossing the Road World Turtle Day."Turtles nest during May and June and are very active as they seek-out nesting areas. The “Give Turtles a Brake” campaign is underway to remind drivers that each year thousands of turtles are killed by unsuspecting drivers. Drivers are advised not to pick up or drag turtles by the tail as it could cause their tail bones to be dislocated. We can tell you in the past that on the State Thruway turtles have been active in the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and Lawton Road in the Town of Clay, among other places.
