A portrait of Larry Myers.

One of the founding fathers of WAER was honored Friday morning at a military graveside service in Oakwood cemetery.

Dr. Larry Myers was instrumental in the launching of the of the station back in 1947 as one of the first college radio stations in the country, and one of the early FM stations. He joined Syracuse University the year prior, and retired 45 years later in 1991. Before he began his career in higher education, Myers served in the Army. He was commissioned as a field artillery officer in 1942, and served for the duration of World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. Myers returned to military service in 1950, when he joined the 403rd Civil Affairs Company as a member of the reserve corps.

Last fall, former students and colleagues gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday. Myers passed away in January.
