The New York State Fair starts in just over a month and they’re looking to fill a wide variety of positions.

It’s the usual amount of openings they see this time of year.

But, the new Interim Fair Director acknowledges it’s a little more challenging these days because of an extremely competitive job market in a post COVID world.

However, Sean Hennessey is confident they’ll fill the 400 or so positions in advance.

“So, we’re looking for folks to oversee operations, whether it be putting folks on and off of stages or the various judge classes that we have here.  We’re looking for folks across the board. The Fair is, I use the 4 f’s… food, fun, farming and family as the big kinda blanket for the New York State Fair.  So, if you want have a great time, you want to come down and join us, we’d love to hear from you,” Hennessey said.

He says there are Superintendents of buildings who require a certain level of experience and talent, and therefore earn a little more.

Hennessey says they are also looking for people with agriculture and cooking talents.

If folks have a specialty and maybe they’re a farming family or maybe they’ve cooked for a living and maybe they’ve left that type of work and want to join us for 13 days,” Hennessey said.

Starting pay for other positions for grounds work are generally between $13 to 13.50 an hour.

There are also openings for Trades Generalists that requires skill or semi-skilled work experience for repairs and maintenance of both facilities and equipment.

Numerous security positions are also available, and other staff who interact with fairgoers to cover the 375 acre site.

“Safety is really the one that we try to direct people towards first but, you know, guest relations is a big one.  Having that happy person as they come in to greet folks as they come in onto our ground.  You know, it sets the tone as they travel the fairgrounds and take part in eating sausages or visiting the cows and sheep.  We want people to have a really positive atmosphere when they’re here,” Hennessey said.

Once positions are filled, they’ll have a workforce of around 800 when the State Fair gets underway on August 26th.

The event runs 13 days.
