Ex-businessman gets prison, fine for failing to pay $618K in payroll taxes

A former Syracuse resident who owned several businesses has been sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to intentionally failing to pay nearly $618,000 in federal payroll taxes for his employees.

The 61-year-old Dean Whittles owned DJ’s on the Hill and DJ’s on the BLVD and 317 restaurant. He also was the former owner of Dejon’s Hair Design.

Whittles was sentenced in Utica on Wednesday to two years in prison and three years supervised release. He must also pay back all of the money he owed, plus a $10,000 fine.
