Central New Yorkers in need of disposing of their expired or no longer needed medications can do so at secure sites — kiosks have been installed at various Kinney Drugs locations.
The program aims to keep medications from being dumped into waste water systems or misused by people not prescribed the medication. The American Association of Poison Control Centers in the U.S. handled more than 2 million human exposure calls in 2020.
More than three-quarters of the calls were related to unintentional infection of medication and 42% of all poisonings that were reported involved children under the age of 5.
