Gov. Kathy Hochul announces Syracuse as one of seven cities that will receive a share of $28 million to combat gun violence and homicides.

Project RISEis a state initiative with the goal to lower gun violence by funding community organizations and charities. RISE and other New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services gun violence prevention projects received $227 million in funding from the state's 2023 budget.

"The scourge of gun violence requires bold investments on multiple fronts, and by investing in local organizations through Project RISE we will help meet each neighborhood's needs, address local challenges, and provide effective, sustainable solutions," Hochul said in a statement Monday.

Community-based organizations will each receive up to $2 million to either implement, expand upon, or improve existing programs and services to increase opportunities for youth and families. Project RISE funding is specifically intended to empower neighborhoods disproportionately affected by gun violence and improve public safety.
