Officials reminding public about new ID needed to fly starting next spring

Americans will need an updated ID that requires some added security measures next year if they want to fly domestically.

If you want to board any domestic flight in the United States after May 2023, you’re going to need a Real ID or a passport. It’s simple and will be a part of your New York State driver’s license. New York Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark Schroeder said travel in the country will require the presentation of a Real ID, an enhanced driver's license, known as an EDL, or a passport.

"If you wanna visit grandma in Fort Lauderdale after May 3rd, 2023, please get your real ID or your EDL or make sure you have a valid passport.”

If you have a star on the upper right-hand corner of your New York license, you have Real ID. According to the Department of Homeland Security, to get a Real ID you'll need documents proving your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and lawful status.

There is also an option for an enhanced driver’s license, which allows Americans to re-enter Canada and Mexico. It also allows you to board a plane for a domestic flight and has an American flag in the upper right corner.

Madison County Clerk Mike Keville said that obtaining a Real ID is not something that should be delayed.

“Even if you don't intend to travel, even if you have family across the country that you could end up in a circumstance where you need to travel, you're going to put yourself in a position where you're going to have to wait 2 to 3 weeks to be able to get that document mailed to you from Albany after going into get it," Keville said.

If your driver's license is up for renewal, you can receive a Real ID at no additional cost. The price is $12.50 if your license is not yet ready for renewal. Schroeder said that either a Real ID or EDL is sufficient for residents of Central New York.

“I don't know if a lot of folks like to go to Canada or not. If they do, they want to get an enhanced driver's license. But if they want to come to the great Hancock Airport, here in Syracuse, they have to have the Real ID by May 3rd so they can board a plane," Schroeder said.

To apply for a Real ID, visit your local DMV branch or the agency's website. Officials recommend using the document checklist to ensure that you have all materials needed. Married women with name changes must present a marriage license from the state. The deadline to obtain a Real ID is May 3, 2023.
