Central New York’s music scene is gearing up for festivals with live music in the warmer months ahead, and a local singer-songwriter is ready to kick things off this weekend.

Cam Caruso began performing and singing when he was a teenager in choir and musicals and then made the transition from classical to more popular music.

“I started when I was about 18 doing the more singer songwriter kind of thing, and I wasn’t really able to find my voice until a few years in," Caruso said. "I’m still working on it, in a way. The technical side and the classical side was still there very strong.”

His fans voted him Best Artist at the SAMMYs People’s Choice Awards. Caruso feels the exhilaration of the win and a busy schedule of upcoming performances. For Caruso, he just enjoys making music and following his passion.

“For me, it was finding something that I enjoyed that was worth putting that work in," Caruso said. "There hasn’t been anything else that I’ve found in my life that it doesn’t feel like work. The booking and stuff, yeah that part is work technically. But, like when I’m sitting there performing for three hours, more often that not, it doesn’t feel like work.”

Cam Caruso plays "Rockin’ the River" in Oswego this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center.
