Seven illegal dirt bikes were taken off the streets by Syracuse police

Warmer weather could mean a return of loud motorcycles to the streets.

The Syracuse Police Department said in a new release that they are taking a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to illegal dirt bikes and ATV’s in the city.

This past weekend four dirt bikes, two mini-bikes, and a motorized bike were seized. Police say they had the help of Onondaga County Parks and the county’s Air One helicopter in tracking down illegal bikes, one of which had changed license plates to appear legal.

The fines are $500 for a first offense, $750 for a second and $1,000 for a third. The third offense is a misdemeanor and is also punishable by up to a year in jail.

They plan to continue the detail throughout the summer months.

The Syracuse Common Council unanimously passed a law in 2021 to stiffen penalties for illegal operation of motorcycles and ATVs after noisy riding through downtown and other city streets became more commonplace.
