Rowley to seek Republican and Conservative lines in 50th NYS Senate Race

The current Democratic Senator John Mannion recently announced his intentions to run against Republican Congressmember Brandon Williams paving the way for a new candidate. If Rowley is successful in securing the nomination for the Republican and Conservative lines and gets the support of voters, he would be the second Republican to hold the 50th Senate Seat since John DeFrancisco retired.

The 50th District State Senate race is already heating-up with the current Chair of the Onondaga County Legislature announcing on Thursday he plans to run for the seat. Jim Rowley says he strategically wants to break the democratic supermajority in Albany. He also wants to represent a changing Onondaga County in the district when a major micro-chip plant opens in the Town of Clay.

“I think the district is doing to change quite a bit in the next Census cycle because of Micron coming to town. My strategy is to get into the seat, win it, hold it, until the next Census… and if I’m still able, I’m certainly interested in running… but, hopefully set it up for the next person.”

Rowley invited the media to join him and his family on the front lawn of his ‘Fairway East’ home in Liverpool on Thursday to announce his intentions to run without any other politicians present.

“This is about families for me. It’s about my family and the thousands of families in the district who are struggling to pay the bills… that are worried about what’s going on in their schools and they’re afraid to go to the mall because they might be the victim of a crime.”

He cites the Democrat’s energy policy as “impossible” to reach and calls the government’s spending “out of control.” Rowley also worries about public school education changes ahead for standardized testing and fears the Regents program could fade away. He has previously served as Town of Clay Supervisor, Chief Fiscal Office of Onondaga County and presently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations for the Oneida City School District.
