A new pickleball complex opened at Onondaga Lake park this morning. The new addition is located just inside the Lake Parkway entrance. County Parks Commissioner Brian Kelley says the facility is already becoming a popular gathering spot.
“This is for the community and, you know, our mission statement promotes exercise, healthy well-being, stewardship. This facility does all those things, we’re just happy to give it to the community.”
All 12 courts were filled this morning with several players lined-up for their reserved play times. Marilyn Nandin of North Syracuse has played for about a year now. She feels pickleball has several benefits.
“It’s good, it makes you move… you haven’t got to run very far which is good. But, it keeps you busy, your agility. It keeps you on your toes.”

The coordinator of CNY Pickleball, Brook Bregman estimates that about 3,000 people play here in Central New York and there’s more new players every day.
“So, every single day I teach clinics of new players and there are 10 to 30 new players everyday.”
Bregman says new players can buy equipment for about $25.
