A select group of 12 student musicians from Syracuse City Schools are spending the week practicing with musicians from the Syracuse Orchestra at its first ever held summer camp for kids. Students rehearse daily for about an hour alongside the pros. City Schools Orchestra Instructor Leigh Parry–Benedict says the camp offers new learning experiences.

“They’ve gotten some tips on auditioning and practice techniques from professionals who are in the field who have to audition on a regular basis, on a high level.”

Student musicians like Miles, Phoenix and Anthony say they’ve gained valuable experience at the music summer camp.

“I knew that they were good. I did not know they were experts, I knew they were pretty good and they are really nice.” - Miles

“I like how everybody here is patient with each other and we’re all like different levels of learning. So, they take the time out of their day to come here and help us.” - Phoenix

“I also think they’ve been really good and I like all the songs that we’ve been doing and it’s really fun.” - Anthony

Students leave the camp with skills in sound recording, digital editing, and insights on how the music industry works and where to find jobs.
